Emirati designers shine at fashion show

The Dubai Ladies Club is committed to...

The Dubai Ladies Club is committed to casting light on talented Emiratis across all fields. It introduces them to the society and works with them to become internationally recognised. Recently, the club organized Oriental Red Carpet, a fashion show of four Emiratis in fashion and jewelery design.

Hessa Al Falasi said, “I feel fashion and style is what really completes the look of a beautiful woman. Besides, the beauty of the fabrics has had a great impact in drawing my attention to the field. My love of the field started when I was a little girl when I used to make dresses for my Barbie dolls,” she said.

Hessa, a 21 year-old and student at Zayed University, said: “I have specialised in teaching children because I love to learn about children and families, and I also took courses in fashion.”

Her passion for fashion also drove her to fashion design courses to enhance her skills, and she had courses in Dubai international school for art.

“I always aspired to be in the fashion industry but I used to procrastinate [on] the idea. However, the credit goes to my friend and partner Hind Al Mutawa who encouraged me to create our brand Nabrman. I owe her a lot, because she believed in me.” Hessa is a partner at Nabrman boutique in Jumeirah.

Morover, For Moza Al Mazroui the tryst with fashion started for fun.

“My interest in fashion started for fun, I used to design handbags with a friend for fun, and after taking a fashion illustration course I entered a competition in 2006 for designing evening dresses, where I won second place,” she said.

She enjoys the whole process of design, and that made her study fashion design and earlier this year she launched her first collection during Dubai Fashion Week A/W2010.

Sheikha Lubna expressed gladness at being recognised by Forbes as the most powerful Arab woman and the among the world’s 100 most powerful women.

“I dedicate this great UAE achievement to the wise leadership of the UAE and to Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Mother of the Nation, who sets an example to follow, not only for UAE women, but also for all women in other Arab and Muslim countries.”

UAE Pet Lovers

At 23, the founder of the UAE...

At 23, the founder of the UAE Pet Lovers is an Emirati atthe forefront of a growing movement to rescue animals and educate the community about their welfare.

“People just don’t put a lot of thought or care into the pets they get, with many of the kittens and puppies ending up abandoned once they grow up as they weren’t considered cute anymore,” says Ms al Dhaheri, who often goes to schools to educate young children about the importance of mercy and kindness towards animals.

After a slow start, UAE Pet Lovers has more than 1,500 members and growing – but there is more work to be done.

“There is a new trend among the young Emiratis of buying pets as birthday gifts, which, of course, we are against and are doing everything possible to stop that from spreading,” says Ms al Dhaheri.

With no options for earning a veterinary degree available to her within the UAE, Ms al Dhaheri instead took up hospitality management. She juggles school and a part-time job at a hotel with her work taking care of animals in distress. In the most recent challenge, Abu Dhabi Municipality has said the pet hotel must be run in a building, and not a villa with a garden. However, Ms al Dhaheri refuses to give up her vision and she believes some of the UAE’s wealth should be used to accommodate its strays.

“Change never comes easy, and someone has to be the first to do this,” she says. “I will not give up on our dream of providing a safe haven for the animals in the UAE.”

Opinion, Debate, Argument

Emirati men shun women who study abroad...

Emirati men shun women who study abroad

An article was posted and have caused alot of debate and frustration. I thought why not highlight it here. I wouldn’t agree with the fact stated in the article where

“Emirati women are having second thoughts about studying abroad for fear that being perceived as “westernised” will damage their chances of finding a husband back home.”

Nowadays we Emirati women have high and different priorities. Marriage is not on TOP of our list nor something we are desperate for (I don’t speak for all though). Plus the second thought of studying abroad is not of the fear stated above its out of respect to our family and parents who just don’t approve or because its about time we have faith in our country and use the universities they have built for us.

“I am afraid if I study abroad my chances of getting married will significantly decrease, because many Emirati guys do not accept a woman who studied in a foreign country and was exposed to different cultures than our own,” said Sara, who would only give her first name.

Well let me highlight something here. We Emiratis whether abroad or in our own country we are EXPOSED to different cultures so whether we go abroad or stay in the UAE we get exposed. Plus why care what “Emirati” guys accept or think? Why don’t they “Emirati guys” expect what they expect from a  Non-Emirati women who they marry what they expect from an Emirati women. Why always put expectations on Emirati women when believe me if you open your eyes WIDE you will see that you have been missing alot!!

“Emirati men love to think the one they will marry is pure in all senses. Studying outside means coming back with a liberated mindframe.

hmmmm what is not pure about studying abroad? .. and about the “liberated mind-frame” so does this imply that while we are in our country we are imprisoned and tied up? We Emirati women have worked so hard to reach where we have reached. We have been given the right to study abroad and work and fulfill our dreams by our religion, rulers, and culture and no one will take this away from us.

To all guys out there who think similarly to what have been stated in the article allow me to say that you feel threatened by any successful woman and all you want to see is a low self esteem woman who is always depending on you. Well sorry but we now are independent, successful, educated, have a voice and opinion, and have a very high self esteem. And for all the women, girls out there change your way of thinking because this is not true. Increase your self esteem and be confident that the right guy will not have such excuses and will support you all the way. Let me highlight one last thing there are many Emirati guys who are not like this and what frustrated me was why was such article published in a way to belittle the Emirati guys and women.

…. I wanted to change the WORLD!

Aida Al Busaidy, the first UAE national female presenter in English, is the symbol of its youth power. Not to forget that she is one of Emiratweet’s supporters and was involved with us since the beginning. Proudly to mention her here and to post her interview in Great Dubai Guide.

Well done Aida we are so proud of you .. We’d like to quote her from a previous interview

what message does she have for young Emarati women? “I want to tell them, be positive,” says Aida. “When you wake up in the morning, smile. It really, really makes the rest of the day. Try to be different. Don’t take the same route to work every day. Try a different route. Change your perspective in life. Do it for yourself, more than for anyone else. Believe in yourself. Don’t let anyone stand in your way — not even yourself. When you believe in yourself, people around you will believe in you. I never thought I’d be where I am today. I took the initiative and pushed myself hard. I want others to do it. I want them to know they too can do what I do. I want to tell them, ‘Go out there and see what’s happening around you!”
