Sheikh Zayed’s Personal Secretary

Sheikh Ahmed bin Mahmoud Al Balushi was...

Sheikh Ahmed bin Mahmoud Al Balushi was Sheikh Zayed’s first secretary and his representative when he ruled AlAin. After Sheikh Zayed moving to Abu Dhabi, he remained with him, and moved to stay with him in the palace of the fort, and the first request from Sheikh Zayed to him was to write to the people of Abu Dhabi living abroad to return to their children and country which is waiting for them. After establishment of the state Butti Bin Bishr AlYassi AlMarri became the secretary of the Head of State.

Butti Bin Bishr, One of Shaikh Zayed’s personal secretary, recalls what life was like when a driver was considered an extremely important person. Butti remembers when a man who knew how to drive a car was given pride of place in Dubai. Bedouins would prepare a feast for him each time he came visiting.

Besides being known for accompanying Shaikh Zayed as his personal secretary, Bin Bishr is a well-known figure among the national community for his philanthropic work and support of youth. He was also close to Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

“I was a friend of Shaikh Saeed Bin Shakbout, Shaikh Zayed’s uncle. He used to call me when he used to head to Al Ain for recreation. I used to go to him in Abu Dhabi in my car and then we used to head to Al Ain or sometimes I used to meet him in Al Ain directly from Dubai.

In 1966, Shaikh Zayed went on to become the ruler of Abu Dhabi. “On December 25 of the same year, we had New Year holidays. As we were heading to Al Ain to spend the holidays, we spotted military cars near an oasis, so we knew that Shaikh Zayed was in the area. We went to greet him. At that time, he asked me: ‘Where is your bag?’ I said it was in my car. He ordered one of his guards to take my bag from my car and put it in his. It was then that he chose me to be his personal secretary.”

About the personality and nature of Shaikh Zayed, Bin Bishr said: “Shaikh Zayed used to encourage people to be educated despite the hardships and the lack of materials. He was a loveable person and had good relationships with everyone. He was very down-to-earth.”

Bin Bishr also recalled how Shaikh Rashid, when he became the ruler of Dubai, first focused on education.

“He used to take the youth from the UAE and send them off to study abroad but in a way that they could come and teach others here,” he said. The curriculum back then was religious and used to start with memorising the Quran, according to Bin Bishr.

Bin Bishr was the first to excel in using the typewriter back then.

“I used to hold the first place in typing in Arabic at that time. I used to type 75 words per minute. People would come to see Bin Bishr type on the typewriter,” he recalled.

Also, he said about life in Dubai back then, people used to have two meals a day, lunch and dinner, while the breakfast was a cup of tea and some dates. Some people would even skip dinner. People used to spend most of their time at work, which required a lot of travelling — whether for trading, fishing or diving. They used to spend winters in the Al Shindagha area and in summer, they used to move to Bur Dubai, which was a forest of palm trees and farms and the temperature would be low, compared to other areas.

“Allah has blessed this country with leaders who worked hard to provide stability and security for citizens. All sectors, from trading, fishing and other jobs, were encouraged and they also flourished, especially because there was no tax on traders or businessmen,” he said.

Salma AlSharhan First Emirati Nurse

Salma Sharhan is the first Emirati nurse...

Salma Sharhan is the first Emirati nurse in the UAE.

“They made fun of me but I treated them” -Salma Said

Salma Salem Al Sharhan was born  in Ras Al Khaimah in the early thirties also known as “Florence of the UAE”, in recognition of her 520-year career in nursing. She was named after the celebrated English nurse, writer and statistician who laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment, in 1860, of her nursing school at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. She is not married and her brother died  few years ago and now she lives in Saif Bin Ghobash hospital in Ras Al Khaimah, which is considered her home. She was given a Permanent room there and also the Ministry of Health decided that they will not retire her where she will receive her full salary.

Salma did not study nursing, but when she was fourteen years old,  one of the sheikhs in Ras Al Khaimah made her a nurse, where he trained her and taught her the definitions of some of the tools used at the time in treatment. She treated at the Nakheel Pharmacy in Ras Al Khaimah which was a pharmacy composed of three rooms and a clinic. The clinic belonged to the British Council where it was based on the care of the health sector in the UAE, and then she was trained her by first doctor in Ras Al Khaimah which was a British named “Fayroz” , where taught her all the basics of nursing. Then they moved to the Palm Hospital, which was opened in 1961 by the British Council.

Salma’s advice to all the nurses out there is to preserve the secrets of patients and to welcome them with a smile always, and to put up with them because the nursing profession requires great patience .. We wish that all the nurses follow her advice and we would like to say that we are proud of her; she is a role model that we should learn from her as she opened the way for the UAE women to work in the field of Nursing. Also, Salma stressed that the most important thing is to maintain the ethics and also work hard in serving the UAE..

Recently she won Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences as an appreciation for her work.

DIFF: Emirati filmmakers

“We have reached a stage where we...

“We have reached a stage where we can compete, and it is great to have an award for Emirati filmmakers.” – Khalid Al Mahmoud

This year’s DIFF celebrates local filmmakers with the inaugural Muhr Emirati award. Fourteen directors have been shortlisted to compete for the inaugural Muhr Emirati award, which will be presented on Sunday at the festival’s closing ceremony. They include well-known names and younger directors who submitted new work covering a wide variety of subjects and in many different styles, from documentary to feature and from real stories to fantasy. Here are some of the competitors:

  1. “Two Guys and a Goat” By: Saeed Al Dhaheri The film is a comedy about two guys who steal a goat, and I selected this topic because I like comedy. It was near Eid time, when the prices go up, and the idea started developing.
  2. “Letters to Palestine” By: Rashid Al Marri The film is a number of video messages sent from the UAE to the Palestinian people. The idea was based on Ziara Initiative, which organises a visit to Palestine for some groups, but Arabs who can’t travel to Palestine would also like to send video messages. The film was completed in October.|
  3. Malal (Boredom)” By: Nayla Al Khaja The film is about an Emirati couple who go to South India for their honeymoon, but the bride is bored during her honeymoon. The idea occurred to me when I was once trapped in a hotel in Sharjah during the rain. I couldn’t go out or do anything, and I was extremely bored. This is when I started writing the story.
  4. “Etmah (Darkness)” By: Ahmad Zain The film is about the role of the postman in the past. He used to deliver messages, read them for their recipients and sometimes even write their reply for them. The idea was mine, but the scenario was written by Saeed Salmeen.
  5. “Soweer” By: Saud Mohammad Merwesh Soweer is a traditional game. The film is about a lonely girl who lives with her grandmother. She meets a fairy who becomes her friend and plays with her. It is a fantasy, and I always wanted to make a fantasy movie.
  6. “Hayat Min Sakhar (Life of Stone)” By: Moaz Bin Hafez The film is a documentary about an old Emirati man from Ras Al Khaimah who gathers stones from the mountain and sells them. It is a real story that inspired me.
  7. “Ghawas Gaza (Gaza Diver)” By: Ali Khalifa Bin Thalith The film is a documentary about a Palestinian boy who had his legs amputated in Gaza and came to the UAE for treatment, but ended up learning how to do dive and loving it. I am a member of the Tawasul Diving Society, and I suggested that the boy tries diving to help him heal.
  8. “Sabeel” By: Khalid Al Mahmoud The film is about two kids living with their grandmother. They sell vegetables to buy her medicine. It is a simple story and a window through which we can see the lives of these people.
  9. “Hamama” By: Nujoom Al Ganem Hamama is a documentary film about a 90-year-old woman who works as a healer. I was looking for a real life character and a friend of mine who is interested in heritage suggested her.
