Call for Special Needs People in Workforce

The Community Development Authority (CDA) yesterday (24...

The Community Development Authority (CDA) yesterday (24 October 2010)  held a meeting on the rights of people with disabilities to get suitable employment with human resources managers representing government and private sector institutions. The meeting focused on CDA’s efforts and its partners to integrate, enable and facilitate the involvement of people with special needs in the workforce and its Elkayt programme, which provides vocational guidance and follow up as community education as well as advisory services for institutions willing to provide appropriate jobs for people with disabilities.

“Alternatively, the employer can send their job requirements straight to CDA, who will nominate appropriate candidates, and some modification of job description may be required,” Amnah Al Obaidli, Manager Community Care

The UAE Federal Law 29 of 2006 concerning the rights of individuals with special needs (2006) addressed the issue of discrimination against people with special needs and promoted equal opportunities in health care, employment, sport and education. CDA’s mission does not end with the employment of one of its candidates, but extends to offering support for the individual and their employer which may include intervention to change job requirements or even providing an alternative job, if necessary.

Dubai Metro for Special Needs

“Facilities for ‘special passengers’ are excellent within the stations and the trains, but the access and exit areas on the roads need urgent improvement as they are dangerous for handicapped people,” said Kaltham Obaid Bakheer Al Matroushi, Manager of the Ladies Section at Al Thiqah Club for the Handicapped.

The Dubai Metro’s facilities for people with special needs were put to the test on Tuesday with the help of “special” volunteers from all over the UAE. Although most facilities provided to help passengers with special needs were praised by the volunteers, they pointed out some “barriers” which they feel should be removed to ensure a hassle-free journey.

The volunteers from the Ministry of Social Affairs completed the full journey using the facilities. They went through the whole process of buying Nol cards to embarking and disembarking and coming out of stations before filling out a questionnaire given to them by the RTA to get their feedback.

“Since we [the special needs people] believe in the slogan ‘nothing for us without us”, the initiative will help improve the system, making it special needs friendly.
