Germany vs Argentina

Germany tore Argentina apart to book their place in the semi-finals and, for now at least, end Diego Maradona’s dream of winning the World Cup as coach to go with his victory as captain in 1986.

Inspired by Bastian Schweinsteiger and two-goal hero Miroslav Klose, Joachim Loew’s side scored four times for the third game at this tournament in what was a devastating attacking display. For once in the tournament it wasnt just a case of Argentina being exposed but the Germans destroying a nation that were favourites to win the Whole competition. The Germans are often renoun for the organisation and “safe” way of playing yet no one can argue they deserve to be where they are at this stage and are know actually looking like favourites with their style of play.An organised Spine in the team, players in the attacking third with flair,1 unit in how they coordinate with each player knowing where and how to play and a real team spirit. An great example was after Muller had put the Germans infront Argentina attacked and threatened to equalise when Four Argentinians were caught Offside. The Offside rule has been under scrutiny for years ,yet the manner that the Germans came out was like synchronised swimmers frustrating Messi and Co and Tevez squared the ball to Higuain to see his goal Disallowed. At times this win was reminiscent of the way Germany had ripped through England’s backline in the second round a week ago, with Argentina caught out by their speed and incisiveness on the counter-attack as they chased the game.

The only cloud on Germany’s horizon is that the impressive Mueller picked up a booking that means he will miss the last-four clash with Paraguay or Spain, but Loew still has much to savour from this match.Frustration began to kick in as it was illustrated on the animated Maradona and it began to show on his players too.Nicolas Otamendi picked up the first booking on 11 minutes for fouling Friedrich, while Javier Mascherano clattered Schweinsteiger three minutes later and was lucky to get away without a caution which would have caused him to miss the semi-finals.

We talked about the Argentinians defence being shaky and the Germans exposed it in particular Sebastian Schweinsteiger limiting any opportunities for Lionel Messi yet still managing to carve out passes, like a quarter back to a wide receiver.Otamendi had one of the worst displays defensively and will want to put this game behind him as Podolski and Co were just too strong for them.Friedrich managed to add to his tally and Klose continued his record for the national team scoring two in a game that could of been more.Fittingly, the final word went to Klose, who volleyed home Germany’s fourth from Mesut Oezil’s cross in the last minute – his 14th World Cup goal – after the imperious Schweinsteiger had brought the ball forward again. Recap + Argentina vs South Korea

Afternoon Emiratweeters!

After being away for a day due to traveling i bring to you a much rejuvenated writer and the competition seems to be underway with the second round of matches. Spain Lost, South Africa humbled and Switzerland on top of the World? or just the European champions. We kick off today at Johannesburg with one of the favourites-Argentina looking to book their place in the next round of the competition against Korea. There has been allot of talk about the M & M show (Messi and Maradona) and they will continue to dominate the headlines for obvious reasons. However, I wonder how Argentina will fair in the later stages without one player that can win you a game on breaking up the oppositions play and distributing the ball simply to one of the more attacking players.

That player is the experienced Cambiasso and having just won the Champions league, the Cup and Seria A only time will tell whether the “invisible wall”will be missed in Maradonas side. Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain scored a hat-trick as Argentina saw off South Korea at Soccer City to all but book their place in the last 16 of the World Cup.The in form striker has the tendency and strikers instinct to be in the right place at the right time and displayed his attributes today. Park Chu-young’s own goal was not the start South Korea had in mind and Argentina continued to display wave after wave of the Ski blue flair. The fans were treated to some real fluent two touch football that the tournaments been yearning and it goes back to basics which I’m sure Maradona has reminded the players that simplicity is key to the eye because if you try to hard like Spain did yesterday it over complicates the rhythm and looks desperate. But with half-time looming, Dimichelis handed South Korea an unlikely lifeline. Caught between deciding to clear his lines or pass back to his goalkeeper he did neither, and Lee nipped in to steal the ball off him and superbly finish past the advancing Sergio Romero. Both teams traded attacks but Maradona emphasised the depth in the squad by modestly bringing on Sergio Aguero-his son in law and replaced the “pitbull” Carlos Tevez-whos hard work and determination is an example to any youngster who wishes to learn the art of Closing down and defending from the front line.. Aguero didn’t take long to settle as Argentina added the icing on the cake moments later as Higuain wrapped up his hat-trick with a close-range header after Aguero’s unselfish cross from Messi’s flick carved South Korea’s defence to pieces.

South Korea head coach Huh Jung-moo could only watch and admire but would still be confident of qualification after the positive signs displayed over the two games. Argentina 4 South Korea 1

Seeing is Believing

Seeing is believing, and half the population...

Seeing is believing, and half the population of Planet Earth were waiting to see Diego Maradona as head coach of the Argentinean National Team to believe he can lead the Albicelestes to glory again; this time around without touching the ball miraculously.

Diego Maradona opened his account at the World Cup 2010 as the national team’s head coach and managed to grab a 1-0 win over a resilient Nigerian side.

Pundits and football fans alike are still in doubt that Maradona can replicate his achievements as a player when he is not in control of the ball. The win over Nigeria is deemed by many as a lucky result especially when we looking closely at the shaky defense line that didn’t live up to the occasion.

Yet, I see great outcomes from the 1-0 win. Away from the fact that the win earned the South Americans the necessary three points to gain confidence, a bigger win would have taken them with over confidence into the next game. The one goal narrow win will keep them levelheaded when they meet a fast and organized South Korean team that showed discipline and seriousness.

Another good outcome from the game is the performance of Messi who has been criticized heavily for not being able to reproduce his stunning club form on the national level. However, Messi was majestic on the ball and performed his most favorite trick three times, which would have seen him end the match scoring a brace if it weren’t for the unbelievable saves by the Nigerian goalkeeper Enyeama. I personally haven’t seen Messi cutting from the right flank towards the edge of the box and attempting his swerving shot except with Barcelona; a feat he repeated successfully many times especially in the 08/09 season. Moreover, and at the time when di Maria was not able to get hold of the ball on the left side of the park, Messi was spotted on that side slicing through the defenses and assisting his helpless fellow wingman.

A last observation will be about the behavior of Maradona, the coach, during the match and at the final whistle. Maradona had a lengthy conversation with his “on-the-field-coach” Veron during the first half and it was sort of the type of conversation that you would only see during trainings. Maradona was not giving Veron instructions he was consulting him, and this means a lot of trust from Diego towards his players. And at the end of the match, Maradona was smiling, for a change, and he held Messi high into the air because he knew that Messi showed heart and determination when most people thought he forgot them in Spain, more specifically Barcelona.

It is too early to judge if Maradona will be successful throughout the whole tournament, but Maradona showed he is determined to bring the Cup back to Argentina the same way he did in 1986, and attempted in 1990.

Argentina vs Nigeria

One of the favourites played yesterday and with the M and M show the Argentinians really have alot to be proud of. For years one could not ignore the sheer brilliance of Diego Armando Maradona arguably one if not the most gifted players to ever play the wonderful game. His character and persona are vibrant, loud and over the top to many but one cannot ignore that he was blessed with a talent that for years saw defenders try everything possible to stop his destiny. Encore Lionel Messi who is a World wide name and who many journalists and football managers consider not only the best player in the world but the best player to ever play the game. How ironic that his manager is the one person that overshadows him and the likes of PELE and Zidane. I believe that having watched Messi play live this year he is out of this world but in order to match his mentor Maradona and proclaim the title for “the best ever” he needs to win A WORLD CUP and develop his career by moving to another club in the future and demonstrate his brilliance just as Maradona did with Napoli in Italy. What is quite remarkable about Messi is his ability to make things look so easy at the age of 23.

A simple shrug of the shoulders and a smile after a moment of magic is all it takes to change any game and if he can replicate his form at Barcelona this year he outrageously has the ability to win this World Cup on his own. It will be up to Maradona to protect not only Messi but his fire tempered squad as they have in my opinion, the most threatening attack in the whole competition with stars like Tevez, Di maria, Higuain, Palermo and one of my personal favourite Kun Aguero. Maradonas prized Galacticos may not have produced the goal feast  the world was anticipating-but what an individual display of brilliance Messi displayed. Watching him it felt like at any moment he could step up an extra level. If it wasn’t for Nigerias Keeper Vincent Enyeama breathtaking saves it would have been a Basketball scoreline yet the Nigerians can be proud of a sturdy solid display maintaining their dignity. Verons Corner was met by the ex Manchester united defender Gabrial Heinze with a powerful header and how ironic for a defender to score with such an array of attacking talent.Johannesburg were entertained with Maradonas Men and a good start to the tournament for the extravagant manager who publicly stated that if His Argentina side won the World Cup he would run naked in the streets of Buenos Aires. Steady Diego the World is watching…… Argentina 1- Nigeria 0
