Sharjah Flag Sharjah (ash-Sh?riqa) meaning ‘rising sun’
The third largest of the seven emirates, Sharjah is situated between Dubai and Ajman. Modern development took off in the early 1970s resulting in the rapid expansion of the town and Emirate as a whole. It is known for its beautiful and impressive architectural buildings, mosques, museums and distinctive souqs. Sharjah was also the first port in the entire middle east to possess fully equipped container facilities at the Sharjah Container Terminal. Its impressive port at Khorfakkan provides important facilities for ships that do not need to enter the Gulf. It was one of the first emirates to promote tourism. The peaceful hamlets of Khorfakkan and Kalba are a major tourist attraction and provide a getaway from the hustle bustle of the city life.
Today, it is known as the Cultural capital of the U.A.E. Sharjah is the headquarters for the UAE Authors’ and Writers’ Union which has over a hundred publications to its credit. It is home to some of the most interesting architectural heritage in the country and some traditions that have all been forgotten. The cultural and historical heritages of the region are on display in the museums that Sharjah has built over a period of time.
Under the guidance of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Sharjah has earned the title of the cultural capital of the UAE.
