Everyone should develop and use common courtesy and respect for others, regardless of what country, region, state, or city. There is way too much rudeness, nasty language (and gestures) and lack of respect. The Golden Rule is still the best way to conduct yourself.
A BRITISH Man has been sentenced to two months in jail after giving an airport worker “the finger” in Dubai.
The Sun of London reports that Paul Anthony a 34-year-old British man has been arrested and sentenced to two months in jail for showing the finger to a woman worker at the Dubai airport. He got into a row with a woman airport employee when she reportedly refused to let him use a customer services desk phone. He ‘cursed’ the woman in front of her colleagues and then thrust his middle finger in her face as he passed through border controls.
He was convicted of indecency and insulting the employee. He, however, pleaded not guilty and launched an appeal. Court officials said Anthony worked for the UN and was planning a stopover in Dubai en route from an unnamed Asian country.

Obviously this man was rude but who the hell goes to jail for 2 MONTHS for doing something like that? That’s absolutely dumb and embarrassing. Maybe a fine or something or one day in jail if you have to. Some laws are getting out of hand. He didn’t have sex in public or anything, he was just rude and angry. It HAPPENS.
What about Emiratis in other countries? A lot of them don’t go by the rules. Have you heard what they do in London with their cars? There was an accident that happened during the summer involving Emirati guys. They disturb the residents by driving their loud cars and all of that.
It goes both ways.
Dear Emaratiya,
Please find this link: http://www.emiratweet.com/2010/08/15/reckless-drivers-charged-in-london/
I support Emaratiya’s post. This happens everywhere. I also dislike it when the nationalities are mentioned. This is where the labeling starts.
Additionally, it would be interesting to read exactly what the conversation was like between both parties. Most of the time, the story is only told from one angle to support a point that people want to get across.
However, people in any country must learn to respect other people generally.
I suspect that this man would have behaved just as badly in Heathrow Airport. People who are rude and disrespectful of other human beings are usually consistent in their behavior no matter their location. He’s just used to getting away with it.
You will see that the reckless drivers won’t get sentenced 2 months jail.
I agree that visitors should show respect but 2 months jail for this insulting behavior seems absurd… A 2500 Dhs fine would be more than enough. I hope he has more luck in his appeal, a horrible situation to be in.
