Unfortunately this shows how washed-up and cold- hear-ted some people are in our community!
Respect for the dead, burial and Mourn for dead people. Is this how we do so? What happened to caring? Unfortunately SOME people have become SELFISH and forgot all about EMOTION!!!

I find it funny that this site is talking about shame when it shamelessly strives to go against our Emirati way or life on a near constant basis.
As for this case… Greed + too much money + too little upbringing + an EXPECTATION brought on by past high profile deaths = selfish.
Truthfully I never understood why any holidays were given when a ruler dies. It sends the wrong message. You can mourn and grieve while at work. Infact it’s probably better as you will have people around to comfort you.
This happened to me personally today as 3 guys in my office are from RAK, and all 3 had tears in their eyes all day. But we were there for them. If they stayed at home, they would sulk and be in a very bad place emotionally. In the end of the day they had smiles on their faces, hard smiles, but we didnt leave their sides, had dinner with them as well, and will go with them to pay our respects in Friday in RAK.
I agree with giving a day, or 1/2 a day, so that we can go to the Janaza prayers. That would have been nice as it is a great honor to be able to pray over the dead. But no more. No death shoud bring any time of happiness.
Then again as we are just 10% of so of the population, I’m surprised we arent mourning foreign leaders instead of our own. 90% of the people here just dont care.
Although I agree with Abood’s comment that having full day holidays might convey the wrong message and create the association passing away of a ruler = holiday, I am truly disgusted by a blunt statement such as “90% of the people here just don’t care”. Why assume that all expats are heartless? Because we were not born Emiratis does not mean we don’t care about the Rulers. As a reminder many of us made the choice to live in this country. I am an expat living in RAK and think that the passing away of a Ruler who has accomplished so much during his living is truly sad. If I can benefit from such a good quality of life in RAK it is in great part due to him and am very thankful for that.
When his passing away was announced I did have the reflex to ask about the days off (after commenting on the sadness of his passing) but it was more having in mind to not offend anyone while working when I should not and make sure I re-arrange my schedule keeping in mind the respect of traditions and most importantly the deceased.
That being said I think this post by Emiratweet is a good reminder to keep in our heart the respect of the deceased and try to be less selfish. I too often wish human beings were more… human
