Shakira says she has fallen in love with football and she is rooting for Spain in the Final. Mario Kempes thinks that Spain has the edge over Netherlands. Johan Cruyff believes that the Spanish “play a better brand of football.”
The only person who will have the last call on the winner is Howard Webb. The English referee will be in charge of the final game of the World Cup 2010, when Netherlands meet Spain in Johannesburg in the Soccer City Stadium.
Both teams host big talents who will be remembered for a long period as heroes of the modern football era. These same names are not equal in value or history to their predecessors. Sneijder is not Gullit, Heitinga will never equal Koeman’s history, Casillas is a Saint but not a Zamora, and Arbeloa is surely far away from registering his name as Hierro did. However, all of the 46 players of the two teams are determined to overshadow the trophy less history of their ancestors and becoming the World Champions.
Technically, the game will be played at a fast pace. Whoever controls the middle of the field will reign the game and the result. Xavi’s passes will prove crucial to open the score sheet. While Robben’s tricks might cause havoc on the right flank and bring the goals.
Del Bosque’s key to win the game, and in my modest opinion, is fielding Torres in the starting eleven. It is true that El Niño has not scored any goal in South Africa, but he will be essential to help Villa grab the goals. Bert van Marwijk knows how to contain Villa and will not allow him slipping past through his defense line. Fielding Torres in will change the equation and split the attention of Netherlands’ backline. Another point of view will be starting again with Pedro. The Barcelona youngster has all it takes to assist the attack on the right wing, and given his speed, he might be too good for the 35 year old Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
It has been a strange or actually a weird World Cup. Both Spain and Netherlands have never won the trophy before, and for this fact, and this fact only, it will be a joy and a thrill ride to watch the game, and the Final Chapter of South Africa 2010.
The Final Chapter
