Statistics show that matchday one of the group stage has not seen lots of goals compared to the previous tournaments. 25 goals in 16 games means a 1.5 goal per game when compared to a 2.4 goals in 2006 and 2.88 in 2002. Statistics also show that the 25 goals were the result of only 132 shots on target while at the same stage of 2006 there were 159 shots on target and 181 in 2002.
Many observers are blaming the ball of the match, no other than the famous “Jabulani”, the defensive tactics of the teams, the effect of the air and altitude of South Africa, and even the pre-tournament injuries that have kept some influential players like Robben on the bench.
However, I blame none of all the above. I have said earlier that matchday two of the group stage will produce better performances and more goals, and so far what I saw has been happening. I am no fortune teller, but a reason behind the shortfall in goals is the determination of teams to win. Winning in Africa is a personal challenge, too, for many coaches this time as they need to justify their odd team selections and claims earlier. Moving forward, all of these coaches have played cautiously to secure the win by all means.
Now that matchday two kicked off, we are witnessing the goals, we are enjoying the performances, and last but not least having glimpses of a beautiful World Cup.
Uruguay has caused the host nation a huge disappointment and nearly scrapped South Africa’s hopes of qualifying to the play-off stage. 3-0 was the result to the Souh Americans, and Diego Forlan sealed a brace.

Argentina entertained the World on Thursday, and Diego Maradona’s descendants played unselfishly to produce four goals, and to record the first hat-trick of the tournament by the revolutionized Higuain.

Last but not least, Mexico has recorded its first ever win over France, shocked the football audience, and sealed a 2-0 win against a team that is a ghost reflection of the 2006 runners-up.

More games are in the pipeline, and more goals are to come; once all the teams have gained the confidence they need after a levelheaded start.
