43 YEARS WOW!!!
It was originally built in 1967 by a Dubai resident when H. H. Sheikh Rashid bin Maktoum, the late Ruler of Dubai. It is the oldest zoo in the Arabian Peninsula. It was considered a Dubai landmark in the late 1960s. The management of the Dubai Zoo was taken over by the Dubai Municipality in 1971. Then from May 1986 to May 1989, part of it was redesigned and rebuilt. From June 1989 until today, there has been multiple re-designing initiatives and renovations. We then heard In February 2009, it was announced that the zoo project at Dubailand was on indefinite hold!!
Now I have say that passing by it every time I am at Jumeira Rd. reminds me of my childhood and sends me a breeze from the old days but I can’t not say “RELOCATE IT” I feel for the animals there … I hear alot of people saying that with all the things there is in Dubai there is no time to visit the ZOO, some people have been here in Dubai for years but haven’t yet bring themselves to go there, we Emiratis don’t go there anymore and rarely would anyone take their children there too. So Why is there? Other than reminding me of how good things were back then …
Dont close it, dont shut it down … relocate it to a bigger place, show some compassion to the animals. A place like Dubai deserves a better home for these poor animals.
What happened to this ?

Dubai Zoo is a Hideous Place!
I’ve been to it a couple of times when I was a kid. As I grew up, I recall only one memory of that place and unfortunately its not something that I’ll be able to forget.
That place is a hell hole for animals. There is no consideration whatsoever to the inhabitants. They lack proper facilities, the cages are too small and cramped. Animals pass away in their own filth, and yet they remain there for visitors to have a look at, seriously?!?!?
I had a friend who decided to photograph the zoo for a photography project. One of the pic’s was of a couple of dead chicks in a cage. Are u kidding me??? First off, why would a zoo put chicks on display? I mean, these are chicken chicks not exotic fauna off spring! Secondly, they were all dead…. This place is a hell hole for animals.
I have no words to express my anger and dismay at such a poorly managed community attraction. Surprised that it has stayed functional for so long, I say good riddance to bad rubbish. As an “Emarati”, i have no fond memories of that place. There is nothing “WOW” about a place that doesnt know the meaning of the word “welfare” for its occupants. Dubai Zoo needs to take a few lessons from the Al Ain zoo.
So what would a first step be?
Awareness? who would we contact? lets make it an action then ..
There is a Facebook group to petition the municipality about Dubai Zoo and one of the admins is preparing letter templates so it is easy for people to write letters and express their shock with the zoo’s conditions. A much bigger zoo should have been built for these poor animals years ago. The Jumeirah location just isn’t big enough.
Other than a letter what can we do?
As an Emirati you can do much nopre rather than us expat who have not much acces to the govt. this is your country and don’t expect the expats to do Volunteer work all the time. After all this is your country and you have to pave the wway for the future.
Please take this criticism positively and God Bless you for highlighting this issue.
Question is, do people care enough?
What is the municipality doing? Arent there any standards? What is the benchmark? Why not adopt best practices from abroad? Hire professionals?
I’m not sure what would kick start a transformation but I do know that people have brought up the situation many times before with no results…….
Speaking of Dubailand, what’s happened to the two bengal tigers residing there? Are they being relocated?
@English you are right and this criticism is +vely taken … thank you
@Maitha yes we have alot of people Emiratis and Expats who care .. but we are not sure what the municipality is doing really .. we as Emiratweet assure and like we always do when we make a step towards change …
Contact the newspapers too. Make them aware that there is a large number of people here, both expats and Emiratis, who’d like to see positive change for Dubai Zoo.
